Why AirDrop Fails (The Short Version)
AirDrop uses a combination of Bluetooth (to discover devices) and WiFi (to transfer the file). If either is glitchy, AirDrop breaks. Common culprits:
- → Bluetooth or WiFi is off, in a weird state, or recently updated
- → Personal Hotspot is on (blocks AirDrop)
- → Devices are too far apart (AirDrop range is about 9 metres)
- → Receiving settings set to "Contacts Only" and you're not in their contacts
- → Screen is locked on the receiving device
- → Both devices aren't on the same Apple ID or WiFi network
- → A macOS or iOS bug — this happens more often than Apple admits
Fix 1: Toggle Bluetooth and WiFi Off and On
The most reliable fix for most AirDrop issues. Don't just use Control Centre — go to Settings.
On iPhone/iPad:
Settings → WiFi → toggle off, wait 5 seconds, toggle on. Repeat for Bluetooth (Settings → Bluetooth).
On Mac:
System Settings → Wi-Fi → turn off, wait, turn on. Same for Bluetooth.
Note: Control Centre toggles on iPhone only disable the connection temporarily — they don't fully restart the radio. Use Settings for a proper reset.
Fix 2: Check AirDrop Receiving Settings
If you can't see the other person's device, their AirDrop might be set to "Contacts Only" or "Receiving Off".
On iPhone (iOS 16+):
Settings → General → AirDrop → set to "Everyone for 10 Minutes"
On older iPhone (iOS 15 and earlier):
Control Centre → long-press the connectivity box (top left) → AirDrop → Everyone
On Mac:
Finder → AirDrop (left sidebar) → "Allow me to be discovered by" → Everyone
Fix 3: Turn Off Personal Hotspot
This is a surprisingly common cause that Apple doesn't advertise. If Personal Hotspot is on, AirDrop is disabled entirely.
Settings → Personal Hotspot → toggle off. Then retry AirDrop.
Fix 4: Keep the Screen On and Unlocked
The receiving device needs to be awake with the screen on. If the screen locks during the transfer, AirDrop will fail. Keep the receiving device awake while the transfer completes.
On the receiving iPhone, you can temporarily disable auto-lock: Settings → Display & Brightness → Auto-Lock → Never (set it back after).
Fix 5: Restart Both Devices
Old advice, but it works. Bluetooth and WiFi radios can get into bad states after software updates or heavy use. A restart clears them.
Hold side button + volume down (iPhone) or Apple menu → Restart (Mac). Once both are back on, try AirDrop again before doing anything else.
Fix 6: Sign Out and Back Into iCloud
If AirDrop consistently refuses to work between specific devices, your Apple ID authentication may be the issue — especially after an OS update.
iPhone:
Settings → [Your Name] → Sign Out → sign back in. This resets iCloud-dependent features including AirDrop handshake.
Fix 7: Reset Network Settings (Last Resort)
If nothing else works, resetting network settings clears all WiFi and Bluetooth configuration. You'll need to reconnect to WiFi networks afterwards.
iPhone (iOS 15+):
Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings
This won't delete your photos or apps — only saved WiFi passwords and Bluetooth pairings.
When None of the Fixes Work
Sometimes AirDrop just refuses to cooperate — especially when transferring between iPhone and Mac, after a major iOS update, or when you need to send to someone who isn't in your contacts. AirDrop also has two limitations that no fix can solve:
Only works between Apple devices
No Android, no Windows. If the other person doesn't have an Apple device, AirDrop is not an option.
Requires proximity
Both devices need to be within roughly 9 metres of each other. It won't work across a building or remotely.
For these cases — or when you're simply out of patience — SpeedyShare is the most practical alternative.
The Fastest AirDrop Alternative: SpeedyShare
SpeedyShare is a browser-based file sharing tool that works like AirDrop without any of AirDrop's restrictions. Open it in any browser, upload the file, and the other person scans a QR code or enters a 6-digit code to download it.
AirDrop
- ✗ Apple devices only
- ✗ Same room required (~9m)
- ✗ Breaks after iOS updates
- ✗ Blocked by Personal Hotspot
- ✓ Fast when it works
- ✓ Built-in, no setup
SpeedyShare
- ✓ iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows
- ✓ Works across any network
- ✓ No Bluetooth required
- ✓ Up to 2GB per file
- ✓ Files auto-deleted after 30 min
- ✓ No app or account needed
How to use SpeedyShare (30 seconds)
- 1Open speedyshare.app in your browser on the sending device
- 2Click "Send files" and select the file you want to share
- 3A QR code appears — the other person scans it with their camera
- 4They tap Download — done. Files are automatically deleted after 30 minutes.
Common AirDrop Questions
Why does AirDrop say "waiting" and never complete?
Usually a Bluetooth issue. Toggle Bluetooth off and on in Settings (not Control Centre) on both devices, then retry. If the receiving device's screen locks during transfer, the transfer will stall — keep the screen on.
Why can't AirDrop find my device?
Check that the receiving device has AirDrop set to "Everyone" or "Everyone for 10 Minutes" (not "Receiving Off" or "Contacts Only"). Also ensure Personal Hotspot is disabled, and both devices are within 9 metres.
Does AirDrop work on the same WiFi but different networks?
AirDrop uses Bluetooth for discovery and WiFi Direct (not your router's WiFi) for transfers, so you don't technically need to be on the same WiFi network. But some corporate networks block the WiFi Direct traffic AirDrop relies on, which is why it often fails in offices.
Can I use AirDrop to send to Android or Windows?
No — AirDrop is Apple-only. For cross-platform transfers, use SpeedyShare, which works between any combination of iPhone, Android, Mac, and Windows.
Why did AirDrop stop working after a software update?
iOS and macOS updates frequently break Bluetooth and WiFi state, which AirDrop depends on. The most reliable fix is to fully restart both devices after an update — not just put them to sleep. If that doesn't work, try signing out and back into iCloud on both devices.
